The villanelles were easy to follow, and the use of repetition made these poems much more powerful than others that we’ve read. The two repeated lines put emphasis on the meaning of the poem, and you couldn’t lose sight of what poet was saying because of it. The rhyme scheme and style were deliberate, but it wasn’t so complex that you weren’t able to enjoy the poem itself. The lines echoed throughout the poem, which made it almost haunting in “Mad Girl’s Love Song” especially. The repetition of “I think I made you up inside my head” in the first, third, fifth, and sixth stanza becomes more profound because of how often it appears. If it had only been included once it would have been overlooked, but the way it is repeated gives it a significance it wouldn’t have had otherwise.
