Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)?- Alan Jackson

Where were you when the world stopped turn on that September day?

Were you in the yard with your wife and children

Or working on some stage in LA?

Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke

Risin’ against that blue sky?

Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor

Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones

And pray for the ones who don’t know?

Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble

And sob for the ones left below?

Did you burst our with pride for the red, white, and blue

And the heroes who died, just doin’ what they do?

Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer

And look at yourself and what really matters?

[Chorus]

I’m just a singer of simple songs

I’m not a real political man.

I watch CNN but I’m not sure I could tell you

The difference in Iraq and Iran

But I know Jesus and I talk to God

And I remember this from when I was young

Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us

And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turn on that September day?

Were you teachin’ a class full of innocent children

Or drivin’ down some cold interstate?

Did you feel guilty ’cause you’re a survivor

In a crowded room did you feel alone?

Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?

Did you dust of that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened

Close your eyes and not go to sleep?

Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages

Or speak to some stranger on the street?

Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow

Go out and buy you a gun?

Did you turn off that violent old movie your watchin’

And turn on “I Love Lucy” reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers?

Stand in line and give your own blood?

Did you just stay home and hold tight to your family?

Thank God you have somebody to love.

[Chorus x2]

And the greatest is love.

And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turn on that September day?

Ode on Pot Roast

Ode on Pot Roast

David Enyedy

Roasted beef emitting smells of home

Taste of you keeps me there where ever I should roam.

Mom is standing over an open pot

While Dad and I give pool our best shot.

Walking through Hebron’s brown, green, and grey,

I wish to be at home eating pot roast today.

My mouth waters at the succulent taste of it

But the only food here is like shit.

Foods like it make home nice,

Tiny piece of home comes with me tonight.

Making me full, feeling fat.

I love returning home, because that’s where it’s at.

Ode to Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

Sizzling and popping form a melody

to the notes of the frothing grease.

Rich smells taunt hungry buds

and salivating tongues.

Unfurled heat radiates off of the

flushed embers.

Spring green tips blacken

and crisp from the feral flames.

Fingers collect juices

while wrapping the flexible

around sturdy stalks.

Chins welcome dribbles from

salty and bitter tastes,

while fat softens around crisp bites

that are welcomed by growling stomachs and

expressed through smiles renewed.

Ode on a sacrificial Altar

Ode on a Sacrificial Altar

Awake! Thy fear of obsidian,
Awake! The shrine of darkness,
Endless stairs through the cloud,
With the vines interveined, with the grace in the rave.
Inside the chamber of holy flame,
Shine the ray, soul doth free.

Surplus blood, please flush, submerge the skull piled up
Above me, the eagles hover, drinking the milk of its owner’s offer.
Die of honor, my father. Calm the wrath, do it flesher!
Open your eyes, move not
‘n Stare at the scarlet, fear not
the blade of certainty splits the breast of uncertain.
How beautiful, exenteration!

Sun, spread the conner of thy eyes
War trophy,
Time to see your father, son.

Ode To Spring Rain

Ode to Spring Rain

Sarah Brouwer

I want to stay standing in this rain,

Engulfed in the thick mud;

Producing a happiness not feigned

Through drops on my fingers.

I wish that I could look at the sky,

Feeling the falling drips,

Without pellets falling in my eyes.

But how can I complain.

You will bring flowers to me one day,

Though surely that day is not today.

Wind Beneath My Wings – IZ

It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine
You always walked a step behind

I was the one with all the glory
You were the one with all the strain
A beautiful face without a name
A beautiful smile to ease my pain

Did you ever know that you’re my hero
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
You are the wind beneath my wings
You are the wind beneath my wings

I ke i’a po ke i’a au me o’e
Ke i’a po ua ho’i ma i au
He loa ka helena ma ke a la hele
E huli wahi ma ke i’a au

Mau popo au ua i ke ho’i
Ka home iloko ku’u pu’u wai
U’a ho’i mai i’au ke i ke nei au
Ma oli au au ana hou
Ke mau popo He Hawai’i au
Ke mau popo He Hawai’i au
You are the wind beneath my wings
Ooo ooo oo oo oo
You are the wind beneath my wings
Ke mau popo He Hawai’i au

Ode on Mosquito

Mosquito destined to fly the world sucking blood

She did not choose her fate any more than we did.

However she must risk her life to suck the blood from

Those jealous donors who will always forbid.

Wherever she travels she makes enemies

Except for those who love to eat her as a snack.

In morning are swallows at midday are dragons

At night are bats amid the endless black.

I ask you, what sort of life must this be?

Eaten or hated by all but a flea.
