Soldier For God

Soldier For God

David Enyedy

He’s born, crying, to a fam’ly in Maine,

Ensconced by the dark wood he would soon tame.

Raised up rugged, living off the woodland,

Raised with Lord God and a gun in his hand.

Daddy taught him that the Good Lord made all,

Brother taught him to make the musket balls,

Mama taught him to treat a good girl right,

And sister taught him how to win a fight.

‘Fore he knows it, he starts to hear the call,

To fight, and he knows he’s prepared to fall.

Stephan Richard was writ on the black line,

“The best army since those that crossed the Rhine.”

Men cry all around him for their mothers,

Not just his friends, but so many others.

Reaching under his shirt for his gold cross,

With his left hand, he gives a bomb a toss.

Returns to Maine with God, and very soon,

He finds true love, and a romance will bloom.

Lizzie’s the good girl Mama taught him ‘bout

Love unconditional, they never shout.

As he grows frail, Richard teaches of God,

His sermons are so great they leave folks awed.

When he dies a small phrase would have sufficed.

Richard “A faithful minister of Christ.”

The Great Bear

Hannah Whitman was an only girl

Who lived with Dad and three brothers.

She never knew her mother Pearl.

Beyond them there were no others.

Hannah grew up like any man

And was nobly slain like one too.

Hunting in the forest they ran

For a great stag they did pursue.

All three brothers tested their luck

But not one could land a true hit.

Hannah aimed her bow at the buck,

With one shot he fell in a fit.

When her father went to inspect,

Out the woods did come a great bear

And with a charge on him it leapt

The sons only watched in despair.

Bow in hand, she took a deep breath

Hannah aimed and hit the bear’s side

It roared aloud and cursed her death

Running at her like a flood tide.

But Hannah shot one more arrow,

Which embedded in the bear’s chest

But then she fell under her foe.

From the bear’s grasp she tried to wrest.

The dying bear made one last try.

With a strong swipe it broke her neck

Murder achieved, it too did die.

Atop its kill fell in a wreck.

Hannah’s father ran to her side

But by then it was all too late.

Saving her father’s life she died

Now Hannah is at Heaven’s gate.

Don’t Give Up

Don’t give up by Peter Gabriel

Don’t Give Up Lyics

in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I’ve changed my face, I’ve changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don’t give up
‘cos you have friends
don’t give up
you’re not beaten yet
don’t give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we’d be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground

don’t give up
you still have us
don’t give up
we don’t need much of anything
don’t give up
’cause somewhere there’s a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it’s going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don’t give up
please don’t give up

‘got to walk out of here
I can’t take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river’s flowing
that river’s flowing

moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs

don’t give up
’cause you have friends
don’t give up
you’re not the only one
don’t give up
no reason to be ashamed
don’t give up
you still have us
don’t give up now
we’re proud of who you are
don’t give up
you know it’s never been easy
don’t give up
’cause I believe there’s a place
there’s a place where we belong

The Thunder Rolls- Garth Brooks

Three thirty in the morning
Not a soul insight
The city’s lookin’ like a ghost town
On a moonless summer night
Raindrops on the windshield
There’s a storm moving in
He’s headin’ back from somewhere
That he never should have been
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

Every light is burnin’
In a house across town
She’s pacin’ by the telephone
In her faded flannel gown
Askin’ for miracle
Hopin’ she’s not right
Prayin’ it’s the weather
That’s kept him out all night
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin’ strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

She’s waitin’ by the window
When he pulls into the drive
She rushes out to hold him
Thankful he’s alive
But on the wind and rain
A strange new perfume blows
And the lightnin’ flashes in her eyes
And he knows that she knows
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin’ strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

[3rd Verse:]
She runs back down the hallway
To the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol
Kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror
He won’t do this again
Cause tonight will be the last time
She’ll wonder where he’s been

Norwegian Wood – The Beatles

I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me…
She showed me her room, isn’t it good, Norwegian wood?

She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn’t a chair.

I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine
We talked until two and then she said, “It’s time for bed”

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn’t and crawled off to sleep in the bath

And when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire, isn’t it good, Norwegian wood.

The River – Bruce Springsteen

I come from down in the valley
where mister when you’re young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
when she was just seventeen
We’d ride out of this valley down to where the fields were green

We’d go down to the river
And into the river we’d dive
Oh down to the river we’d ride

Then I got Mary pregnant
and man that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
and the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle
No flowers no wedding dress

That night we went down to the river
And into the river we’d dive
Oh down to the river we did ride

I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain’t been much work on account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don’t remember
Mary acts like she don’t care

But I remember us riding in my brother’s car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I’d lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she’d take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true
Or is it something worse
that sends me down to the river
though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
my baby and I
Oh down to the river we ride
