Villanelle Reaction- McCaela

The villanelles were easy to follow, and the use of repetition made these poems much more powerful than others that we’ve read. The two repeated lines put emphasis on the meaning of the poem, and you couldn’t lose sight of what poet was saying because of it.  The rhyme scheme and style were deliberate, but it wasn’t so complex that you weren’t able to enjoy the poem itself. The lines echoed throughout the poem, which made it almost haunting in “Mad Girl’s Love Song”  especially. The repetition of “I think I made you up inside my head” in the first, third, fifth, and sixth stanza becomes more profound because of how often it appears. If it had only been included once it would have been overlooked, but the way it is repeated gives it a significance it wouldn’t have had otherwise.

The Fun Sonnet

The Fun Sonnet

David Enyedy

Roses are red and the violets are blue,

I’m so tired of school and freedom none

These plain white walls chain me to my small room.

Seriously, when was the last good fun?

Roses are red and the violets are blue,

And my tired eyes are red from stress and strife

A long night ahead with so much to do

Lord, how the heck has this become my life?

Roses are red and the violets are blue,

Homework, homework, look what you’ve done to me!

I would rather die than have to do you,

Keep this up and soon you will truly see.

Blood is red and the dark bruises are blue

I am sick and tired of this… adieu.

I Miss My Summer Sweetheart

I Miss My Summer Sweetheart

David Enyedy

I think back to the times we spent, us two,

Swimming in the blue-green ocean with you…

Rolling around in the scorching white sand

Confessing our love while holding our hands.

Then you got on that plane and flew away

Leaving me watching the sun set today

Sinking below the ridge while my heart breaks

But my dear I’ll do whatever it takes…

I swear that I’ll find you someday, my dear,

Hold you in my arms, there’s nothing to fear.

Never leave me, and I won’t leave you too

So we can return to that ocean blue

Please don’t despair, my love I’m almost there

Then we can go back to the shining mer

I’ll run, I’ll swim, I’ll climb to just see you

You’re the summer paradise I’ll pursue.

Please God, don’t tease me and let that be her

I’m begging You now for who I prefer.

Oh baby, I can’t believe you left me

But come here we’ve got a whole world to see.

You’re Defending Heaven From Evil Now

You’re Defending Heaven From Evil Now

David Enyedy

A shot from a sick coward took you down

But the Good Lord brought you up to Him, Chris

You’re defending Heaven from evil now

You served with honor, distinction, renown

It boggles the mind that someone did this

A shot from a sick coward took you down

You fought for good, freedom, big and small towns

Saving your friends, because you rarely missed

You’re defending Heaven from evil now

Thank God, you made it back home safe and sound

Saving all you could, fixing the amiss

A shot from a sick coward took you down

Unlike the other veterans you found

That man was yellow as his piss

You’re defending Heaven from evil now

He shot you in the back, didn’t know how

To fight a heroic man like you, Chris

A shot from a sick coward took you down

You’re defending Heaven from evil now

Ode on a Starry Night

Ode on a Starry Night

David Enyedy

When one looks to the black sheet specked with white,

One recalls the simple beauty of it.

While the moon observes like the lord of night

Thousands of stars keep the peace with planets.

Blackness surrounds all the bodies of light,

Leaving this miniscule world so shrouded.

You bring out the creatures that fear the day

As you, starry, leave night-dwellers crowded.

Though black and cold may try to snuff your light,

You still can shine though the cloak of the night.

As the sun grows weary and weak at set,

You relieve him, so he can rest his tête.

Going to Bed Versus Going to Sleep

Going to Bed Versus Going to Sleep

David Enyedy

When you’re going to bed each night, my dear,

I hope you mean you are going to sleep.

For you suffer in bed so much, it’s queer,

That you’d rather go to bed than count sheep.

To go to bed brings me thought of terror

As my harmful thoughts enter my mind’s state,

Counter these thoughts with my precious cellphone,

But as I rest my head, I’m more awake.

Ah, but to sleep! Essential for life,

In which you can rest and relax from time.

Free from worries, free from all of my strife,

And all that’s good is a dozen a dime.

As for tonight, I shall go off to bed

As homework determines when I rest head.

The Abyss

Floating weightless in a confused abyss

Surrounded by the changing winds of time.

I inquire for answers that persist;

What are these strange befuddled thoughts of mine?

Vision clears only to darken once more

As I become blinded by suspicion.

Struggling through mirrored haze I do abhor;

Why do these eyes lack faith in commission?

Limbs have grown numb from lack of gravity.

I beg you for a sturdy handhold in

The infinite of this duality;

When will my feet find rugged ground again?

Adrift in this beautiful chaos I

kiss my fatuous sanity goodbye.

A Wild Novel

Welcome me into your great escape

for the fall of each leaf is equivalent

to the turn of a coffee tainted page.

Your wind carries whispers

that whisk me away in gnarled arms

to places forbidden and adventures foretold.

Release me from your selfish fortitude

That creates an alternative reality.

Through the foggy haze of steaming moss

and the lull of a trickling stream,

you have shown me what the heart

cannot forget;

watchful eyes of jaded mysteries.

Ode to the Ax

Footsteps mark your timeworn paths

Of memories blurred from the inevitable.

I grasp in desperation as you

Slip through the cracks of my aching hands.

Anticipation that awaits the second of your disappearance

Has numbed the pain,

That threatens to blacken a purple heart

Who shyly welcomes the unfamiliar.

Your air quenches my thirst.

Your presence feeds my soul.

And you my friend, are my naive heart.

The Plea

Entities await your rapacious feet

That evade the rich and ransack the poor.

Your shadows burgundy on limpid sheets

As you relentlessly slam gated doors.

Your hands suffocate with eager fingers,

Bruising the tainted light of hopeful dreams.

We run reckless in fear of what lingers

As the hearts of the aghast scream.

We are puppets played by twisted heartstrings

of your revolting breathes requisition.

At your hand the song of the faithful swings

To falter quietly from rendition.

I beg mercy of your sadistic gaze

Yet plead pity when failing heart obeys.
